Abstract

Magnetic-supported kaolin composite was synthesized by co-precipitation method to argument the available pool of adsorbents (natural or synthetic) to remove phosphate from water bodies. The magnetic-kaolin composite (MKC) was characterized by XRD, FESEMEDS and BET analyses. Characterization results showed the successful preparation of MKC with good magnetic property. The effect of adsorbent dosage process variable was investigated and was used for batch experiment study of phosphate adsorption by MKC. The adsorption experiment of phosphate onto MKC showed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum capacity qe= 52.91 mg/g. The dimensionless separation factor (RL) indicated that the adsorbent had affinity for the phosphate ion. This result is comparable with what has been reported for some magnetic material used as adsorbents in batch phosphate adsorption processes.
