Weeds are opportunistic plant species that thrive in disturbed environments, often interfering with agricultural productivity and ecological balance. This review synthesizes definitions, classifications, ecological roles, and control mechanisms of weeds, highlighting their dual nature as both problematic and beneficial organisms. Weeds contribute to biodiversity, soil stabilization, and medicinal resources, yet they also compete with crops, harbor pests, and reduce yields. The persistence of weeds is largely driven by seed bank dynamics and adaptive traits such as prolific seed production, dormancy, and vegetative propagation. Control strategies are categorized into physical, cultural, biological, and chemical methods, each with distinct advantages and limitations. The paper emphasizes the need for integrated weed management approaches that combine traditional practices with modern innovations, including allelopathy, bioherbicides, and precision agriculture. By critically examining weed ecology and management, this review provides a framework for sustainable solutions to weed-related challenges in agricultural and ecological systems.
